I’m a sucker for a good seed/nut bar and any kind of “crumble” so when I discovered Elemental Superfood on instagram I was delighted when they offered to send me some of their bars and crumbles to try. They outdid themselves and were so generous in sending me samples of everything!
The bars and crumbles are essentially the same thing (same flavors, same ingredients/nutrition). They just either come compacted into bars or bagged as “crumbles”. They have 4 flavors…
CRUMBLES & BARS
- Cranberry, Almond + Lucuma
- Currant, Cacao + Hemp Seed
- Dark Chocolate + Peanut Butter (FAV!)
- Mulberry, Cacao + Spirulina
The crumbles are perfect for adding a nice crunch to your yogurt, oatmeal, smoothie/protein shake or as a topping on pancakes, waffles or even ice cream (#amiright?). They were all super yummy. Of course the dark chocolate + peanut butter was my favorite because the combo of chocolate + pb will always have my heart. There’s just no beating it, but the others were delicious as well. I loved using these as a topping for my greek yogurt for breakfast in the morning because I usually make my own homemade granola (which I love) but sometimes I don’t have time to make another batch when I run out…or sometimes I just want to switch it up with something new. These crumbles were perfection on my protein shake the other day. It added a nice crunch and texture and made it even more delicious.
The bars are perfect for taking on the go. They’d be a great snack to throw in your bag for a day of hiking or just a good option to throw in your bag or backpack for a busy day. They are just the right size for a snack and they’re hearty enough to fill you up so you won’t eat it and then still be starving…you’ll be good to go for a while and energized and satisfied! Having all that protein, fiber and even fat will help keep you feeling full. Fat is a dense source of calories so while you do need to watch how much of it your consuming, it is a necessary nutrient for your body and it increases satiety (helping you feel full and satisfied). So all good things!
These crumbles and bars are not only tasty, nutritionally they’re awesome as well. They are packed with antioxidants, fiber, healthy fats and protein. They use all organic ingredients (all-organic is not my thing as you know, but I know that’s important to some people!) so that’s a plus if you are concerned about that. It’s also gluten-free (rejoice my celiac friends!). Overall the ingredients are pretty awesome. They’re fairly basic and real/whole ingredients (always a major plus!). You can check out the specifics of the nutrition facts and ingredients by heading over to their website. But just as an FYI here’s an example of the nutrition facts and ingredients for their Dark Chocolate + Peanut Butter Crumble (the other crumbles are fairly similar nutrition-wise):
Nutrition Facts (Per Serving – 1.8 oz or 1 Bar)
- Calories: 230
- Fat: 16 g
- Saturated Fat: 5 g
- Sugar: 8 g
- Protein: 7 g
- Fiber: 4 g
INGREDITS: Organic Buckwheat, Organic Peanut Butter, Organic Dark Chocolate (unsweetened organic chocolate, organic cane juice, organic cocoa butter, vanilla), Raw Honey, Organic Flaxseeds, Organic Coconut, Organic Sunflower Seeds, Organic Pumpkin Seeds, Brazil Nuts, Organic Sesame Seeds, Cacao Butter, Organic Vanilla Bean, Pink Himalayan Salt, Vitamin E
So there you have it. Overall their products are a little high in fat and saturated fat but just make sure you’re watching your total fat/saturated fat intake for the day. Plus, a lot of the fat in these bars/crumbles is coming from heart healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids (the cardiac dietitian inside of me is smiling…). It’s not too bad as far as sugar goes and it does have a decent amount of protein and fiber. The crumbles, compared to other typical store-bought “granolas” are likely going to be much lower in sugar and higher in fiber and protein…maybe comparable in fat/saturated fat. Overall I give it a thumbs up though. As for the bars, it would totally depend on what kind of bars you are buying now. They may be higher in sugar and fat than some other protein bars out there but they’re definitely lower in fat and sugar than a lot of bars too…just depends on what you’re choosing. These are for sure a good option though. It’s all about balance overall…you know me…balance, balance, balance 😉
