I have a major sweet tooth. If you read my blog or know me at all, you will know this. I basically have to have some form of dessert on the daily. That’s why I always enjoy finding healthier options of my favorite sweets and desserts. Some of you may have heard of or seen Lil’ Buff Protein Cake Mix floating around on social media. When I saw it, I knew I HAD to try it. I mean, come’on. Cake + protein + healthified favorite dessert = UMMM YES, PLEASE! I was super excited when they sent me three flavors of cake mix to try. The original: Fit Fetti mix, a Cocoa Crave mix and limited edition Pump-it-up Spice mix. The mix comes in an adorable little package (not that the packaging matters nutritionally, but really…who doesn’t love cute packaging #amiright?). So anyways…other than being adorable, these mixes require very little preparation and are done in a jiff! All you have to do is add a few healthy ingredients to the mix (applesauce, egg white and milk) and pop it in the microwave for 2-3 minutes and BAM. Delicious cake in under 5 minutes. They also have a “Frostings” page on their website where they provide you with lots of different healthy frosting recipe ideas. And not that it matters…but all the mixes come with a little package of sprinkles included because #sprinklesarelife.
So I decided to try out the original Fit Fetti flavor first. I’m a big fan of anything Funfetti so I had high expectations. This mix…did NOT disappoint. It was fantastic. And guess what. The entire cake is less than 300 calories. Yeah! I know, amazing!
So now you know…they win in flavor and cuteness, but what about nutritionally? WIN again. Here are the nutrition facts for the mixes WITH all the ingredients added. The mixes vary a little, but not much.
- Calories: 250-280 (for a WHOLE cake, whaaa?!)
- Protein: 32 grams (that’s A LOT of protein!)
- Fat: 6-7 grams
- Saturated Fat: 2 grams
- Carbohydrate: 21-27 grams
- Sugar: 11-12 grams
- Added Sugar: <1 gram (wow!)
- Fiber: 8-10 grams (for cake, impressive!)
They’re also gluten free which is nice for those out there who can’t or don’t eat gluten, so that’s convenient. They don’t have that weird taste that some gluten free foods do though and the texture is amazing!
Overall these were a WIN in my book. They taste wonderful, they have very little saturated fat and a small amount of sugar compared to regular cake and a ton of protein and fiber! Fiber is great because it helps with heart health and also helps to keep you feeling full for longer which can help you eat less and help you to maintain a healthy weight. I’m all about any tasty, healthy, high-protein CAKE. So go get yo’ hands on some. ASAP.
