I love trial mix. I love it in any way, shape or form. On most days, I can be found with trail mix in my bag as part of my day’s snacks. I usually always make it myself. I buy bulk nuts, dried fruits, CHOCOLATE (duh), etc. and mix it together to make my own, healthier versions. I recently discovered Meat N Nuts and they were kind enough to send me some samples of their MEAT N NUTS trail mixes. They mix jerky with nuts and dried fruit to make high protein, low sugar, hearty and delicious trail mixes for any occasion. They are perfect for hiking and I love to take them on long hunting days. The mixes they have are…
- A good source of of heart healthy omega 3 fatty acids
- Packed with vitamin B12
- High in protein – 6 to 8 grams of protein per serving
- No refined sugar
- Gluten free
- Hearty and filling to keep you satisfied for hours
Let’s talk about their different mixes…
Cracked Black Pepper Beef Jerky with Nut Medley
This one was probably my favorite. The beef had a great flavor…not too pepper-y. The nuts were a good mixture of cashews, almonds and walnuts. No dried fruit in this one which was slightly disappointing since I think a little fruit is good to add a little sweetness, but overall I loved it.
This one was a little different because it was chicken jerky in stead of beef. I’ll be honest, the chicken wasn’t my favorite…it wasn’t bad, I just like the beef better. I did however, LOVE the dried mango in this one. So good! Again, good mix of nuts and overall, not too bad.
Honey Sriracha Beef Jerky with Nuts and Dried Cranberries
This one was a little too spicy for my taste…BUT, I’m a huge wimp when it comes to spice, so I wouldn’t take my word for it on that. If you like some spice you’d probably love this one. Again, it’s got a good mix of nuts and this one has some added sweetness with the cranberries, which I loved. Overall, despite the spiciness…it was good! (PS I didn’t get a good picture of this one because I ate it all before I got a pic…oops!)
These mixes are great. I love the addition of the jerky because usually trail mixes are just nuts, fruit and sometimes some chocolate. I think the jerky is GENIUS. The only down sides I see are that 1. the mixes had less actual trail mix in the bags than I thought they would…they weren’t very full and I was slightly disappointed in the volume of mix. 2. When left too long in the bag the nuts get a little soft (from the moisture of the meat I think…when they’re shipped they are sent with the meat in separate mini bags inside each). Overall though, I liked them and would give them a thumbs up!
