If you don’t know about Halo Top…well first of all, that’s a shame, so let me fill you in. Halo Top is a brand of high protein ice cream. I’ve tried a few brands of the “healthier” ice creams and this is THE BEST. A lot of “healthy ice creams” are icy and have a weird texture and/or aftertaste…believe me, I know…I’ve tried so many of them. Halo top is not like that! They’re ice creams are creamy and there is no weird aftertaste. They have awesome flavors and lots of CHUNKS of the good stuff 😉 Yay! They’re also a lot better for you than regular ice cream (which, of course, it’s okay to indulge in sometimes!). But if you love to eat ice cream…a lot…then these are a great, healthier alternative.
Halo top is a lot lower in sugar, fat and calories than regular ice cream.
CALORIES…Their pints range from 240-360 calories per PINT (the WHOLE PINT!) aka 60-90 calories per serving (1/2 cup) which is WAY lower than the usual ~130-250 calories per serving. In some cases you could literally eat the entire pint of Halo Top and consume less calories than if you’d eaten only 1/2 a cup of regular ice cream. Wha??
SUGAR…They cut out a lot of sugar by using organic stevia (a sweetener) to sweeten their ice cream. They also use Erythritol, another all-natural sweetener found in fruits like grapes and pears. You may have heard that sugar alcohols/sweeteners cause bloating and GI upset…and they can, if consumed in excess but erythritol is actually a sugar alcohol that doesn’t affect blood glucose or cause bloating, so that’s good news! This means Halo Top ice creams have only about 5-7 grams of sugar per serving compared to the regular ~15-30 found in most ice cream.
PROTEIN…All of their ice creams contain 24 grams of protein per pint (6 g per serving) which is quite a bit! I sometimes have a hard time getting in all my protein for the day so I won’t complain if ice cream helps me do that 😉 Most regular ice creams only have 2-3 grams per serving so Halo Top has double! WIN.
FAT…As a cardiac dietitian I tell people to limit their saturated fat…well I guess my patients can rejoice because Halo Top ice creams have 1 gram of saturated fat per serving (most other regular ice creams have 5-15 grams). Yet, you still get a creamy texture, smooth and delectable! YUM. Yay for healthy ice cream and yay for heart health!
NEW FLAVOR REVIEWS
The great people over at Halo Top were kind enough to send me a couple of vouchers to try some of their new flavors! The first time I went to buy them…they were sold out of ALL the new flavors! Yeah, they’re pretty popular. Anyway, so I went again a few days later and luckily it looked like they had just received their shipment (I usually shop at Smith’s in SLC – that’s where I bought mine) because they were almost fully stocked. I had the hardest time trying to figure out which flavors to try because honestly, they all sounded AMAZING.
I ended up choosing the following 5…here’s what I thought of them with my scores (rated out of 10) for each. Hopefully it will help you decide which ones to try! Once I’ve polished these pints off (which we know won’t take long, I’ll have to try the other five). I’m so excited about these new flavors, Halo Top really did it this time!
I love, I mean, absolutely LOVE anything oatmeal cookie so this was my top pick when I was trying to decide which ones to try…and I was not disappointed. This one was great. The oatmeal flavor is strong (which I like) and it has a sweet flavor. It was creamy and had chunks of oats in it. Definite win.

SEA SALT CARAMEL
This one was okay, I won’t lie…it wasn’t my favorite. It wasn’t bad, but I just didn’t find it particularly good. It didn’t have a very strong caramel flavor, I just didn’t really get the “sea salt” or the “caramel” flavor. It wasn’t horrible…but just wasn’t that great. The flavor was much too mild for me.
RATING: 5 / 10
CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE DOUGH
This one was MY FAVORITE. I was amazed at how creamy it was and it had so many chunks of cookie dough. It was sweet and tasted like regular ice cream…if I didn’t know, I would think it was just “regular” ice cream. Huge fan of this, highly recommend it.

COOKIES AND CREAM
This one was pretty good. I’ll admit after the first bite I wasn’t so sure about it but after a few more bites (I powered through) it started to grow on my and my the end I was really liking it. It was a little more icy than most of the others but overall the cookies and cream flavor was pretty delicious. I give this one a thumbs up.
RATING: 8 / 10
This one was not what I expected. I kind of thought it would be creamy with chunks of graham and chocolate and maybe some mallow but there weren’t really many chunks and it wasn’t very creamy. I liked it okay, but definitely not one of my favorites. However, try it for yourself because you may love it!
