I’ve seen True Story Foods on Instagram and drooled over the pictures of their delicious looking meats. I’ve been dying to try them out for a while now and luckily for me, they were kind enough to send me some coupons to try out some of their meats (sold at Sprouts and Costco). So I headed over to the closest Sprouts and picked up a couple of goodies…
I picked the Oven Roasted Turkey Breast (always a favorite flavor of mine) and the Apple & Wildflower Honey Chicken Sausage. I’ve been wanting to try chicken sausage for the longest time and this chicken sausage did not disappoint. Neither did the turkey for that matter.
So what’s the deal True Story Foods? Well let me tell you. First a few basic facts…their meats are:
- USDA Organic
- Non GMO
- Gluten Free
- Antibiotic Free
Now, you guys know me, I’m not anti-GMO or an organic only gal but in case you are…you’re in luck! And even if you’re not, like me, this meat is still so delicious and has a lot of awesome health benefits, plus…I’m a huge fan of the ingredients!
Some things you’ll love about True Story Foods…
- All their animals are raised on sustainable farms and ranches in the US and Canada and are never caged or treated inhumanely.
- The animals are fed a vegetarian diet, no hormones or antibiotics and their beef is grass-fed.
- Their natural flavorings are REALLY natural, 100%. They come from sources like vegetables, fruits and spices…no chemicals in these meats and no artificial ingredients!
- Anyone with allergies will be happy to know that all True Story meats are gluten-free, nut-free, dairy-free and wheat-free.
Oven Roasted Turkey Breast
This turkey has 12 g of protein per 2 oz. serving and only 0.5 g of fat (no saturated fat) PLUS you can feel great about the ingredients.
The ingredients are simple and only include: Organic Turkey Breast, Water, 2% or less of: Salt.
Three ingredients and one of them is water. So True Story Foods for the win. You’re getting what you want…just turkey (and a LITTLE added salt)…not tons of additives like there usually are in many other deli meats. AND as a cardiac dietitian I am always checking for Sodium in foods. This turkey only has 355 mg per serving whereas most deli meats/turkey usually has >500 grams! Wow, just wow. How awesome is that? The cardiac dietitian in my just wants to jump for joy…
Apple & Wildflower Honey Chicken Sausage
The chicken sausage is fantastic! The combination of apple and honey flavors is so tasty. It goes great chopped for a salad (believe me, I tried it) or just plain or mixed into anything you can think to put sausage in (check out my instagram (@the_baking_dietitian) to see a few of the ways I’ve already incorporated this sausage into my meals). It has 11 grams of protein per link, 6 grams of fat and only 2 are saturated fat. It only contains 540 mg of sodium where most sausages (pork sausage) has >650 grams (of course this will depend largely on the brand you buy).
The ingredients in the chicken sausage include: Organic Chicken, Water, Organic Dried Apples, Organic Honey, Organic Apple Juice Concentrate, 2% or Less of: Sea Salt, Organic Evaporated Cane Syrup, Organic Spices, Organic Onion Powder, Celery Powder, Sodium Lactate.
So…more ingredients than the turkey BUT the first ingredients are chicken, water, apples and honey and the rest of the ingredients are still real ingredients that you can pronounce 😉 and none of those weird additives and preservatives. Another win for True Story Foods! Another thing I love…all True Story Foods sausages are FULLY COOKED. So no long-cooking time waiting to eat. Just pop in the microwave for less than a minute or heat up real quick on the stove and BAM you’re ready to eat in minutes!
Overall these meats were a huge winner in my book. I’d say head on over to your closest Sprouts or Costco and pick yourself up some True Story Foods. You can find the fresh meats at Sprouts and True Story Foods Lemon Pepper Turkey Jerky at Costco. I haven’t tried the jerky yet but it sounds incredible and I plan on trying it ASAP.
