Have you heard of the Low FODMAP diet? If not, this could be pretty beneficial information for you. So here goes…
FODMAP is an acronym for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides And Polyols, which are specific types of short-chain carbohydrates that can cause digestive distress (GI issues) in some people. Often times, anxiety causes these people to avoid all foods that they fear will give them discomfort…which can unintentionally limit and cause suboptimal nutrition. So…after serious medical issues are ruled out, a registered dietitian nutritionist (go RDN’s!) can help identify individual FODMAP triggers while allowing for minimal food elimination (because who wants to be on a super restrictive diet…? Not me.) and maximizing nutrition!
Anyway…this month the Recipe Redux group joined up with Nestle Nutrition to try out their new Low FODMAP nutrition supplements…ProNourish. As a clinical dietitian I often recommend supplements to my patients who have a difficult time optimizing their nutrition. Supplements shouldn’t REPLACE your food, but do just what they are named for…SUPPLMENT (or “add to“) what you’re already eating. Sometimes I have patients who feel like they don’t tolerate the standard supplements very well. That’s why I’m so excited about these ProNourish supplements. So what’s in them you ask? Well…
Total Fat: 4 grams, Saturated Fat: 1 gram, Trans Fat: 0 grams
Total Carbs: 19 grams, Fiber: 3 grams, Sugar: 6 grams
Protein: 15 grams (WOW)
And it’s PACKED with vitamins and minerals. You can find all the nutrition facts here: ProNourish Nutrition Facts
FODMAPs are specific types of carbohydrates that can be difficult for some people to digest. Research shows that reducing FODMAPs in the diet may help reduce symptoms associated with digestive discomfort. This supplement is a low FODMAP nutritional drink with ingredients carefully selected just for these people – Nestle Nutrition
As Recipe Redux Members, we were challenged to create a recipe that was Low FODMAP approved. I wanted to incorporate this awesome new product into my recipe and I came up with a tasty shake! It’s a perfect SNACK or breakfast and you know I love my shakes! 😉 So here is…
**Makes 2 servings**
- 1 bottle ProNourish Nestle
- 1 frozen banana
- 1 scoop chocolate, lactose free, whey protein powder
- 1/8 cup oats
- 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/2 cup ice cubes
- Combine all ingredients together in a blender and blend until smooth
- Pour into a glass and garnish with oats and cinnamon (optional)
- Enjoy your Low FODMAP shake with no GI issues!
Note: “This recipe was developing using low FODMAP ingredients but the recipe itself has not been tested for its FODMAP content.”
PS ProNorish also tastes amazing just plain. This is the French Vanilla flavor and it’s bomb! I love drinking it plain AND adding it to shakes and smoothies!
