So it’s winter…I’m not going to lie…I hate winter. I have such a hard time staying motivated in the winter. I don’t want to go out and do anything. I just want to curl up on my couch, drink hot chocolate and watch a movie….BUT I don’t let myself. Why? Because honestly, exercising makes me feel better. It’s been kind of a rough couple weeks and I’ve been even less motivated than usual. However, every time I force myself out the door and head the gym. Once I get there I feel so much better and afterwards I feel SO so much better. I promise it works. I know it’s hard to be motivated but it’s always worth it in the end. Research and experts agree with me.
Here are 7 reasons you should exercise…
Diet and exercise both contribute to weight. You can’t lose/maintain a healthy weight with just one of the two. They go hand-in-hang and they are both necessary. You’ve got to have a healthy diet and you’ve got to work out. Eating healthy and not working out doesn’t work…working out and eating poorly…also a bad idea. Exercising helps you burn calories, helps you maintain a faster metabolism and builds muscle. But, If you’re eating crap that undoes a lot of the hard work you put in during your workouts. Both count.2. Fight diseases
Physical activity boosts HDL (good cholesterol) and decreases unhealthy triglycerides. Because exercising helps you manage your weight (as stated above) it helps you fight many diseases that are associated with being overweight; diseases such as stroke, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, depression and some types of cancer.
3. Put you in a better mood
It’s true! Elle Woods was right (if you don’t get this reference…First, WHY?? Second…see video below. Working off stress with a good run or some weight lifting, etc. is a great way to deal. On bad days I always feel better after a good workout. Plus I usually work out my hardest on those days. So that’s an added bonus. Physical activity stimulates brain chemicals that help you feel happier and more relaxed.

Exercising actually gives you more energy…making it “easier” to exercise more…or something like that…? Anyway, physical activity delivers oxygen and nutrients to the tissues in your body and helps your heart work more efficiently. Exercising regularly can improve muscle strength and increase your endurance…giving you more energy. 5. Helps you sleep better
If you’re having difficultly sleeping, exercising can help you fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly. However, you may want to avoid exercising right before bed because you may have too much energy to fall asleep…
6. Exercise can actually be FUN
You don’t have to run on the treadmill, spend hours on the elliptical or lift heavy weights in order to by physically active…those things are great if you enjoy them. BUT if not…try other things…dancing, walking, zumba, yoga; you name it. If you enjoy your exercise routine you’re more likely to stick with it. So find something you like to do!
7. Make you feel better about yourself
Working out regularly makes you feel better…because of all the reasons listed above basically. It helps you maintain a healthy weight, which will likely make you feel better about your body. Also, knowing you are going out and doing something that is “difficult” and pushes you thus, giving you a sense of accomplishment.
So…find something you love to do and work. it. out.
*Makes 3 “sandwiches”
1/4 cucumber, sliced
2 oz. grilled chicken, cut into pieces
2 oz. cheese, sliced (I used the Cabot Vermont Sharp)
Homemade avocado sauce (1/4 mashed avocado + 1 tbsp. greek yogurt + dash garlic powder)
Chop and slice everything up then stack it all between two cucumber slices and stick a toothpick it. You’re done…enjoy!
